Recently, I’ve begun to get a good deal of emails from folks wanting advice on how to accomplish a 100 pound weight loss on the Medifast diet. Fair disclosure up front though. I’ve not met this milestone. I’ve come very close, but I think that losing more than I have would be a little much. My goal has always to be at a healthy, and not dangerous, weight. Both my doctor and my BMI charts are telling me that I’m at my ideal weight, so I’ve made the decision to mostly maintain what I’ve already accomplished.

However, I know countless folks who have lost 100 pounds or more on this diet. Many of them share a lot of the same attributes and attitude, which I will share with you in the following article.

People Who Lose 100 Pounds Or More On Medifast Know That This Is A Process: No matter how fast or dramatic your weight loss, losing this kind of weight is just going to take some time. You probably did not arrive at your current weight over night and you’re not going to be at your goal weight over night either. To give you some idea as to how long this might take, the average weight loss on Medifast is somewhere between 2 – 5 pounds per week. So, if you take the mean of this and call it 3 pounds, you’re looking at around 33 weeks or a little over 8 months to get there.

Now, I’ve had many weeks where I lost 5 or more pounds for the week, but I don’t think that you can count on this each and every week. Sometimes, for whatever reason, you’ll have an off week, but typically the next week will be a little higher so that it all averages out. Still, 8 months (and sometimes less) for this kind of dramatic weight loss is not too bad and I think it’s better to set a realistic time frame and then be pleasantly surprised if you beat it. You don’t want to set yourself up to feel that you’ve failed if you only lose say 3 pounds instead of 5. 3 pounds is great. Any weight loss is great. Just sticking to it is great. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. Accept that this is a process that just takes some time and that so long as you’re still trying, you’re doing just fine.

Know That You’re Attitude Is Vital: One of the traps that we all fall into is to see “going on a diet” as drudgery. We go into it with our heads held low and with a large dose of dread thrown in for good measure. Therefore, our brain subconsciously tells us that this is something which is not going to be all that pleasant and probably will not work out too well. Instead, you want to tell yourself that you are taking this opportunity to improve yourself and to get healthy and there is nothing at all distasteful about this.

Try to see it as exciting rather than as “work.” The efforts are going to be very much worth it in the end and your attitude has a lot to do with what your day to day experience is going to be like. You can dwell on the fact that you might have to give up a bit of junk foods or you can learn to love the pretty decent foods that Medifast has to offer. And, you should also know that if there are foods that you don’t much care for, you can change them up. For example, I sometimes add fat free syrup to the liquids (shakes, fruit drinks, etc) and fat free cheese or salsa to the solids. No, you probably won’t find this method discussed on the web site but a lot of us take these liberties and still manage to lose large amounts of weight.

I firmly believe that you should take whatever healthful liberties keep you on the diet. So long as your using low carb, low sugar, low calorie, and low fat ingredients, I don’t think you’re hurting anything. Adding a little cheese or hummus to the diets chips is a lot better than abandoning the diet. Always remember this. It’s also important that you don’t become discouraged if you have a bad day or cheat a little. Just resume your regular routine the next day and move on. You’ve only done irreparable damage if you quit altogether.

Know That This Is A Marathon, Not A Sprint: Just Keep Doing What Works: As I said, this kind of weight loss is going to take a while. Celebrate each tiny success and just keep repeating the process. I know that this seems overly simple, but it really does all boil down to that. Your beginning five pounds eventually becomes twenty which eventually becomes fifty until you reach that magical 100 milestone. Keep your eye on the prize and reward yourself each time you reach your smaller goals. Attitude is a huge part of this so do whatever you need to do to keep yours strumming along. So long as you eat the meals provided and follow the “lean and green meal” guidelines you should have no problem getting into ketosis and therefore losing weight. Trust that this will work and don’t get discouraged at your first set back.

Embrace Movement: To be honest, I know very few people who have reached the 100 pound milestone who have not made the commitment to move more. Now, before you think I’ve turned on you, know that I don’t mean vigorous, boring, or over the top exercise. I simply mean “cranking up” what you already do and already enjoy. Pick up the pace when you clean house. Strap on some ankle weights when you take a walk. Play with your kids. All or any of these things can be quite fun and won’t feel like exercise.

I find that physical activity is vital to my success. It helps my attitude, my frame of mind, and my patience. I have more energy and enjoy my life much more when I take my daily walk. If it rains or I skip it, I can really tell the difference. This is another way that very small changes can make a big impact and can help you reach your goal without there being too much pain or discomfort involved.
