No matter who you are talking to, you will only have a limited amount of time to make others get your point. There are 2 things you have to do: making your audience understand and keeping the time limited.

Did you know that scientists have discovered exactly how long people can listen to a speaker for before they switch off? It is 20 minutes. Your audience probably won’t get up and walk out but they will mentally leave the room – they’ll stop listening! If you don’t get your points across in the first 20 minutes then people might not be listening to you when you do say them.

In a debate you will only be allowed to speak for a few minutes. If you don’t finish what you have to say then you will never get to say it! In a job or school interview you will only have the length of the interview to get your points across. If you don’t manage to tell the interviewer the things she needs to know about you in that time then she’ll never know (and you probably won’t get the job!).

You have lots of things to say – choose 2

When you talk on a subject important to you, that you feel strongly about, you will probably have a lot to say. But if you give people a list – they won’t remember them all. Worse, all they will remember is some of the things you think are important but why will they think those things are important?

You can’t just tell people what you think is important – you have to convince them that they think it’s important too!

So you need to work out the two things your audience absolutely have to know. Then you need to prepare what you’re going to say so that you get these two points across. Since you only have a short amount of time – you need to cut out anything that your audience doesn’t need to know!

Choose one thing you want to convince your audience is true – like you are the best person for the job – and think of 2 powerful arguments that will convince them.

• Don’t waste time telling people things they already know
• Don’t confuse people by telling them things they don’t need to know
• Stick to 2 points that people must know
• Make sure that when you leave – people remember those 2 points
