Saheb Qaranieh Palace was constructed under the orders of Fathali Shah amidst the many buildings in the Niavaran palace complex. Located in the northeastern part of Tehran, the palace has many structures worth visiting during your visit to Iran. You can see Hauz-Khaneh, Korsi-Khaneh, Jahan Nama and Mirror pavilions in this palace. All these sections are artistically decorated with many invaluable paintings and articles.

Jahan Nama, the private sleeping quarters and harem were built in 1867 under the reign of Nasser-ed-din Shah. Haj-Ali-Khan Hajeb-od-Dowlah was the person responsible for building the structures.

The Harem

This section in Saheb Qaranieh Palace was itself a huge complex, which consisted of more than forty buildings. There was one large building. All the smaller buildings had a terrace and four rooms and were meant for each of the king’s consorts. However, when Mozaffer-ed-din-Shah and Ahmad Shah came to the throne, the harem was given much less importance and was thus decreased in size. The palace was at its helm under the Qajar rulers.

Grand Reception

When Reza Khan came to the throne after defeating the last Qajar ruler, Saheb Qaranieh Palace lost its important position among the royalty. Reza Khan did not pay much attention to this palace but tried to develop palace complexes in Saadabad. It was only when Mohammad Reza Pahlavi got married to Princess Fawziah in 1918 that the palace looked glamorous again. The palace staged the reception and the guests were welcomed to this beautiful building.

Complete Makeover

Many reconstructions were made in Saheb Qaranieh Palace with the wall between the harem and the divan khaneh being partly demolished and the furniture inside the palace changed. Many of the attractive carpets from the Golestan Palace were brought here.

The wallpaper was imported from Europe to make the palace look really wonderful. The furniture and the curtain materials were even supervised by a foreign expert. Chandeliers of the most expensive variety were bought from the Tehran market. Sofrah khaneh was also furnished in a better way.

It took about eight months for all these alterations to take place. You may not be able to see all these decorations now during your visit to Iran as Pahlavi II also made many major alterations to the palace.
