You are a dedicated golfer. Some in your family would even say you are a fanatic. You own the best custom fitted equipment. If there is golf gadget, you have it. You even have a Callaway wrist watch. Your family gives you golf store gift cards for birthdays and other gift giving occasions. You are a golfer.

But what about the most crucial element of your golf game, your body? Are you in shape for golf? All of that fine equipment will do you no good if you are not healthy enough to use it properly for the entire round.

It does not matter what level of golfer you are, beginner to pro, you need to be physically fit to play well. Golfers are particularly susceptible to injuries of the shoulders, hips and lower back. I have seen golf injuries of the hands, elbows and knees also.

You need to be sure you are physically ready when you head out to the golf course. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. By that I mean to pace your self throughout the round. Take a minute to rest and relax between shots or after a climb up a hill. If nine holes are all you can handle then leave it at that until you can get fit for golf.

So, how should you go about getting in better shape to play better golf? Should you find a golf workout program or would a simple golf stretching program work better for you? Both would be ideal.

Think about the main muscle groups used during a round of golf and the repetitive actions used in the golf swing. These areas need the most attention.

Begin with cardio exercises to build stamina and endurance. You already know that there is a lot of walking during a round even if you use a cart. A good start to a golf fitness program would be to walk daily either on the treadmill or outdoors. Work yourself up to five miles a day. That is about how far you would walk if you walked the entire golf course.

Next you will want to consider some amount of strength training. This will help to guard against injuries like muscle pulls and strains as well as the lower back. It will also enhance your ability to swing the club properly.

We suggest you focus your strength training around your core. Your core muscles help with balance and stability throughout the golf swing. The chest and abs are of particular benefit as you rotate the club in your swing. Work also on the legs, arms and shoulders. You will find that working on every muscle group in the body will help improve your golf game.

Find a golf specific fitness program to guide in your strength training. You don’t want the standard program you might find at a gym or on a DVD. They are not golf focused and the workouts may actually hinder your golf game.

Finally, you’ll need to consider adding stretching program to your golf fitness routine to enhance your flexibility. A few golf stretches prior to your round and even after your round will help warm you up for a better swing from the start and cool you down properly at the end. This will help to reduce the chance for injury as well.
