The town and lake at Grasmere – Cumbria will forever be associated with British poets. Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey all have associations with the town. Many of the town buildings are built of grey stones found in the area. It is situated on the River Rathay and the population is only around 1, 500 people.

Of all the Lake District poets William Wordsworth is synonymous with the village of Grasmere. He and his sister Dorothy moved here in at the beginning of the 19th Century to live in Dove Cottage. When he married Mary in 1802 and they all lived here until 1808. Today Dove cottage is maintained by a Trust and is a major tourist destination for the area with over 80, 000 visitors a year visiting the house and gardens. Beside the house is a Wordsworth museum with displays about the man himself, artefacts and manuscripts. Apart from his poetry Wordsworth also wrote a guide to the district, which many still find useful.

From 1813 until the death of Mary Wordsworth the family lived at Rydal Mount. A family member purchased the house in 1969 and opened it to the public where they can see how Wordsworth would have lived. The gardens were landscaped by the man himself and are home to a number of rare trees and plants.

Near Rydal Mount is a chapel where the family often worshiped and in front a field that Wordsworth purchased and named for his daughter, Dora. The field is maintained by the National Trust and each spring a large display of daffodils blooms.

It is possible to walk from Grasmere itself round Rydal Water. This is an easy grade of walk and will only take a couple of hours. It is possible to stop at both of the Wordsworth residences while walking this route, turning it into a larger trip.
