Most of us like to dine out. Some of us entertain clients often in our line of work. Maybe you don’t like to dine out at all. But, no matter who you are, at some point or another we all have to make choices on how to eat healthy when we dine out. Believe it or not, eating out is the number one reason people gain weight while they are traveling. And I can testify to that.

I am going to give you some tips that you can use while dining out in restaurants…  

When you go to a restaurant you want to avoid 3 types of food:  

Avoid deep fried food and trans fats and refined vegetable oils  
Avoid starchy foods, and refined starchy carbohydrates  
Avoid sugary foods and drinks like sodas and juices and anything with processed sugars in it.  

OK. So no bread or rolls before your meal, no french fries with your sandwich, no soda or sweet juices, and only small portions of pasta and rice.  

So what’s left? As a substitute, order only meat and vegetables. Instead of bread, eat a salad before your meal. Instead of a hamburger with fries, order just the meat and replace the french fries with vegetables.  

Most restaurants will allow you to substitute fries, pasta, or rice, for a side salad or vegetables.  

Even if you choose to eat the hamburger with the bun, substituting the fries for a salad or vegetables and substituting soda for water or unsweetened iced tea, is a much better choice.  

Just by making a few simple changes to your order, you can save 400 – 900 calories each time you dine out.  

Another helpful hint is to drink a glass of water before your meal. This way you will not eat as much because it will not take as much food to fill you up. Also, when you get your meal, divide it in half and ask for a to-go box. You have immediately cut your calorie intake in half and you have lunch for tomorrow.  

If you really want that large meal, try scheduling a high intensity workout right before your meal. After such an intense workout, your body will be able to burn off the higher amount of calories you will be eating more quickly. The key word here is HIGH intensity. Your workout must be high intensity in order to burn off those additional carbohydrates.  

I hope these tips will help you to make smarter choices next time you are eating out.
