Coffee has a big and rich history behind it, most of which I am sure you are unaware of as you sip your delicious Java every single morning. But don’t take the taste for granted because there is so much more behind your average cup of Joe! The country of origin that Java originated from is Ethiopia, but there are even more legends and history surrounding the birth of the bean.

One of the most popular stories relating to the origin of Java starts in Yemen in a monastery. There is a legend behind the story explaining that monks heard stories of a local goat that was eating wild berries that gave it energy so that it could not sleep all night long. From there, the monks decided to experiment and make a drink from those same berries so that they could stay awake at night. Ah, Java! Not too much has changed, hasn’t it?

Another story involves Mohammed who was visited by the angel Gabriel that brought him a special drink when he was feeling low. The drink itself was black, which symbolized the Sacred Black Stone from the Mecca, and as soon as Mohammed drink it, he was energized and totally refreshed. Sounds like Java to me! Another story is of a shepherd from Arabia who also notice that his goats were full of energy after eating wild berries, similar to the other legend. The shepherd had no idea what was behind this, so he asked for advice from the Abbot Yahia, who then brewed a hot beverage from the berries, which brought everyone who drank it immediate alertness and energy. Java!

No matter which legend you suppose to be true, there are facts in Java history pointing to its discovery around the time of 850 AD, where a goat herder in Ethiopia did discover the caffeinated effects of the beverage after noticing his goats having energy after eating the wild berries. Coffee trees then began to be cultivated in Arabia around 1100 AD, where the Arabs began to roast and brew the beverage. The very first coffee shop in the world actually opened in 1475 in Constantinople, which was completely one-of-a-kind and unlike anything the world has ever seen before. Java became integrated into Europe around 1600 because they started to import it through Venice. The first Italian coffee house was said to have opened its doors in 1654, so we have that year to think for all of the rich espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes that we currently enjoy as a result of that culture.

Java finally hit the USA in 1607 courtesy of John Smith discovering Jamestown, though some Canadians argued that it already had arrived in Canada by that point. From there, Java has spun a rich and decadent history leading up to the current ways that we choose to enjoy our bean. I encourage you as a Java lover to celebrate the history that is behind your drink by always choosing the freshest beans, grinding them at home, and brewing them right away.
