Dubai has made an enormous splash on the global tourism scene over the last decade, but for all its world-leading shopping malls, towering skyscrapers and other attractions, no feat of Dubai’s development is more impressive than the artificial archipelago of the Palm Islands.

These man-made islands are the result of a monumental construction process that involved relocating around 100 million cubic metres of rock and sand, adding hundreds of kilometres of beaches to Dubai’s already impressive roster and creating valuable real estate for property developments, such as luxury hotels and entertainment complexes.

Nakheel Properties began construction of the Palm Islands in June 2001 and the work continues today, although the fruits of their labours can now be seen and enjoyed by visitors to the Palm Jumeirah in particular. Those arriving in Dubai by plane will be awed by the palm tree-shaped archipelago, topped with a crescent, and the cost of construction will doubtless be recouped by the increased interest the islands bring to United Arab Emirates tourism.

While the impact of the credit crunch may mean that completion of the Palm Islands takes longer than the 10 to 15 years originally envisioned, the Palm Jumeirah is up and running and has been housing settlers since 2006 when the first phase of the development was completed. This included construction of 1,400 villas on 11 of the archipelago’s 17 fronds, in addition to 20 Dubai hotel buildings and apartments on the east side of the central ‘trunk.’ Future developments that will add to the Palm Jumeirah’s appeal include spa resorts, additional beaches and extension of the Palm Jumeirah Monorail system, to provide more expedient transport between the islands and the mainland.

It’s not just the Palm Jumeirah that’s set to tempt visitors to Dubai over the next few years either, with its cousin the Palm Jebel Ali also promising exciting attractions. These include four theme parks scheduled to open in 2012 under the collective banner ‘World of Discovery,’ developed by the international Busch Entertainment Corporation to increase Dubai’s image as a major family holiday destination. The four parks – SeaWorld, Aquatica, Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove – will be located at the top of the archipelago’s crescent, on an island in the shape of an orca whale.

The Palm Deira’s opening may lie even further in the future, but together the Palm Islands will surely provide a significant boost to Dubai’s already-impressive visitor numbers – making this an exciting time to see a city in transition.
