The Munich Oktoberfest (Munich Beer festival) is considered as one of the most famous events and the world’s largest fair with about six million  attendants every year. It is an important part of Bavarian culture. In Germany Munich Oktoberfest called Volksfest, which translates literally as a fair and bear festival. The festival was first held on October 12, 1810 to celebrate the royal wedding of the crown prince Ludwig and princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen (and henceforth the name Theresienwiese).

On the fifth day, a great horse race was organized and the authorities decided to rehold the festivities in the following years. Therefore, a tradition took place and  attracted the attention of the local community. Today the Munich Beerfest traditionally is held during sixteen days  and includes the first Sunday in October. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the Munich event. Oktoberfest 2010 marks 200th anniversary of the Munich Oktoberfest and takes place from September 18th to October 4th 2010. The lord mayor of Munich will begin an official starting ceremony in Schottenhamel beer tent. The beer tents open at 10:00am from Mondays to Fridays and close at 11:30pm. On the weekends, the tents open at 9:00am. Each beer tent has its distinctive atmosphere, some known for its crowd or music, the other ones being traditionally more famous for drinks and the various kinds of food they serve. Some impressive statistics of the event consist of 14 giant tents with a total seating capacity of 100,000 serve 5.5 million liters of potent ‘March beer’, more than 600,000 fried chickens and 84 heads of cattle. The annual commercial value of the whole thing is estimated at a minimum of 0.7 billion Euro.
