The last Vinnista Jew killed by a member of Einsatzgruppe D, a gorilla family in southeast Cameroon looking panic in their nest and atomic mushroom clouds spewing on the sky of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are among the world’s most tearful pictures.

Nagasaki and Hiroshima Mushroom Clouds

Another devastating event happened in Japan when two atomic bombs were released in Hiroshima on August 6 and in Nagasaki on August 9. The first one killed about 80,000 people and the second one made more than 150,000 innocents lose their lives and injuries. Furthermore, the powerful wind plus the extremely high temperature and radiation caused enormous long-term damage.

Two pictures capture the mushroom clouds from the atomic bombs released in Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Bushmeat

Many animals from primates to snakes are valuable commodities in terms of worldwide trade of bushmeat, defined as wildlife, are killed either by commercial or subsistence hunters. The endangered gorilla population decreases at an alarming level if one million tons of bushmeat are taken from African forests every year.

A gorilla family in southeast Cameroon (minus the alpha male silverback, who managed to get away) had been slaughtered in their nests by a bushmeat hunter early one morning

Hector Pieterson

Hector Pieterson, an icon of 1976 Soweto uprising in apartheid South Africa, was killed at the age of 12 when the police suppressed protesting students. The 16th June made history as a symbol of resistance to the brutality and now as National Youth Day. It also becomes an important occasion for South Africans to honor young people and bring attention to their needs.

The body of Hector Pieterson was carried by a fellow student

Last Jew of Vinnitsa

The picture “Last Jew of Vinnitsa” belongs to an Einsatzgruppen soldier’s personal album. It captured a member of Einsatzgruppe D ready to shoot one Jewish man kneeling beside a filled mass grave in Vinnitsa, Ukraine in 1941. All 28,000 Jews from Vinnitsa and its neighboring areas were massacred at the time.

The picture shocked many people when it was published

A Sudanese Child and a Vulture

The photo captured a Sudanese child who was starving to death while the vulture was patiently waiting for the toddler died, so he can have a good meal. No one knows what happened to the boy crawling his way to a United Nations food camp. Photographer Kevin Carter committed suicide three months after he took the shot.

Photographer Kevin Carter won a Pulitzer Prize for this shocking picture

Indonesian Deforestation

Indonesia is home to the world’s third largest tropical forest but the natural resource is disappearing rapidly due to severe deforestation for a booming pulp & paper industry and oil palm plantations, which supply diverse products from biofuel to soap to cosmetics. After the forest is cut down, the carbon is released much into the atmosphere.

Because of deforestation, Indonesia is also the world’s third largest greenhouse gas contributor, only behind the U.S. and China
