Strengths are not something we talk about much. From childhood and school exams we are encouraged to focus on our weaknesses.

Let’s shift our focus away from weaknesses – we all have them – and move to exploring and developing our strengths.

If you develop your life so that it maximises your strengths it will be a more fulfilling life. Playing to your strengths is not only easier it also feels good.

By strength I mean something you can do to a near perfect level on a consistent basis. It’s likely to be an area you find relatively easy. When you use this strength you may get absorbed, losing track of time. It may also be something you take for granted, hardly seeing it as a skill – “Can’t everyone do this?”

Action: Discovering your strengths

I’m going to outline three ways to discover your strengths. Use one or more of these methods to build a list of 5 to 10 top strengths.

1 With friends and family

Ask others what they see as being your top few strengths. You may be surprised at some of their answers, perhaps those skills which you take for granted are seen as strengths. When I used this method a few years ago I spoke to 14 friends. They identified common themes of empathy/listening and analytical skills/logical thinking.

2 A few questions to ponder

‘What activities were you drawn to as a child?’ Perhaps you still have hunger or yearning for a childhood passion.
‘Have you ever started to learn a new skill and picked it up so naturally and rapidly that you left others behind?’
‘Which positive situations bring you satisfaction?’

Think of which activity in particular gives you that satisfaction.

Ideally answer these questions and then keep them in your mind over the coming weeks, adding to your lists as thoughts come to you.

3 Using the book Strengthfinder 2.0

This is one of the best books on this subject. At the heart of the book is an internet Strengthsfinder Profile which will help you to identify your top five strengths. I strongly recommend buying this book and carrying out the exercise. I realised from this exercise that my enjoyment of meeting new people and building rapport was not common to all and is one of my key strengths. The book also gives suggestions to develop each strength.

Action: Developing your strengths

Where do you use these strengths you have listed? For example, with a strength of being focused, are you equally comfortable sorting priorities at home and at work? If one of your strengths is creating harmony, do you expend the same effort on being a peacemaker with family members and work colleagues? Look at ways to develop your strengths by using them in more areas of your life.

Seek out new avenues to put your strengths to use. Consider how you can use each of your strengths both in your current employment and also in the rest of your life. Build your life around gaining excellence in these areas.
