Originally according to archaeologists St Kilda was known as Euro-Yroke named after the red sandstone which was used to sharpen axes along the beach. St Kilda was once occupied by the Yalukit William Clan which was once part of the Bunurong group. It was only in 1834 the white settlers began occupying Victoria the capital of Melbourne and in 1802 in St Kilda along with the Aboriginal people. The rich marine resources and large variety of edible plants provided the Bunurong with food. However, the arrival of the white settlers brought about a devastating effect which in addition led to massive de population of the Aboriginal people by around 80%.
