I have never given a seminar on Increasing Your Productivity without being asked, what is the number one aspect that people should zero in on when trying to increase their productivity. When I tell them everything is important, that does not get me off the hook. They keep it up till I spill the beans. So here it is.

Before I spill the beans, so to speak, let me give you some peripheral issues, about the number one tool, some background points to properly frame the concept.

The number one mistake is very easy, people are not aware of the negative impact their work habits have on their productivity. People will come into my office and complain bitterly about their lack of profits, how poor their results are, the poor shape of their business, the list is endless. When I start to look at how they function on a day-to-day basis, the tools they are using, what systems, policies and procedures they have in place, they look surprised. The vast majority of people do not make the connection between lack of success, profits, and poor results with what they consider the mundane day-to-day activities of running a business or functioning in a job. Big mistake.
People react when it’s too late. By the time you are starting a task, it’s too late to make the changes and take corrective steps. As the saying goes, when you are up to your ass in alligators, it’s too late to rethink how to drain the swamp. Much of what we do is repetitive; we do the same tasks over and over again. This should give us the excuse we need to properly analyze and dissect how we do things and re-work them to make maximize our time and get the best possible results. Unfortunately, most of us fail to take advantage of this opportunity.
Increasing ones productivity is an actual activity. This may seem redundant to some of us but this reality does not seem to impress many people. Increasing your productivity is like learning a new skill. If you buy a new computer software package, you think nothing of opening the manual, learning how it works and spending the necessary time on mastering the basics and then spending additional time on getting better and better at it. Increasing your productivity should be no different. A skill that has to be learned, practiced and time has to be spent on getting good at it and then honing your skills to get really good at it.
Getting the job done and getting it done right is another way of saying productivity. Increasing your productivity and getting the most accomplished in the right amount of time is really where the rubber meets the road. Time Management clearly takes place before Production issues are raised or become apparent. Once the decision is made to spend time on performing a function, there is a transferring of focus from deciding what to do to actually performing the task or function. Increasing your productivity is very much a hands-on process; it’s a process that fails miserably if you expect to stand on the sidelines.

Okay, what’s the number on Irrefutable, when it comes to increasing your Productivity?

You have to start to make a conscious effort to increase your efforts and work on getting better results. You have to start to recognize that when things are not going well, profits are poor, you are not happy with your results; you have to turn inward and make some changes. Same old actions get you the same old results.

It’s a hard pill for some people to admit but the buck has to stop with you. If you want to make $ 100,000.00 a year and are only making $ 50,000.00, changes are in order. Concrete changes in how you do things, how you look at your work and planning habits, nitty-gritty changes to the basics are what is needed to turn things around for you. Some people are disappointed with what my number one secret to better Productivity is. I think they assume there is a secret that I’ve discovered that no one else knows and knowing that secret will instantly make them more effective, profitable and happier. Now if you really think I had that kind of secret, I wouldn’t be here talking to you.
