When travelling abroad it is sometimes nice to know the kinds of foods you are likely to encounter in the various countries. So here are a few traditional dishes that are eaten around the world.

Mongolia
In Mongolia, sheep’s eyes are a delicacy, and apparently are a great cure for a hangover when pickled in tomato juice.

Brazil
One of the most popular foods in Brazil is caruru, a spicy stew made with smoked fish or shrimp, quiabo (okra), onions, palm oil and peppers.

Italy
In Italy, pizza and pasta dishes can be found in almost every single restaurant in the country, though the sauces and toppings differ from region to region. In general, the coastline of the country specialises in fish and shellfish, so if you want a prawn or lobster pasta then head for the sea.

Scotland
The traditional dish of Scotland is Haggis – a meal made from the liver, heart and lungs of a sheep, mixed together with some oats and stuffed inside its stomach, which is then boiled for around an hour before being served.

Japan
Sashimi is a very popular dish in Japan and consists of raw, very thinly-sliced fresh fish often served with rice, as sushi, and with ginger, soy sauce and wasabi.

India
As expected, curry is the traditional dish of India and it is said that spices were originally used in curries to mask the taste of unfresh pieces of meat. Authentic curries in India are often not as hot as those created in Britain, and the flavours used are more delicate.

South Africa
Biltong is a traditional delicacy in South Africa and takes its name from the words “bil” meaning buttock and “tong” meaning strip. The beef is prepared by being covered in salt for an hour or more, then it is dipped in vinegar, sprinkled with pepper and coriander, and left to dry.

Germany
German cuisine usually involves eating Wurst and Sauerkraut – sausage and pickled cabbage. These popular dishes can be found throughout the country, and many different types of sausage are available, ranging from Currywurst (curried sausage) to Bockwurst (smoked sausage).

China
Birds nest soup is a delicacy in China and is made from the nests of Swiftlets. Swiftlets make their nests predominantly out of saliva, resulting in this soup having a gelatinous, rubbery texture. It is one of the most expensive animal products consumed by humans.

Cambodia
Street vendors in Cambodia often have large amounts of Fried Tarantula for sale. The arachnids are commonly eaten throughout the country and are fried whole with a bit of garlic and salt.

Philippines
Balut is a delicacy in the Philippines and consists of fertilised eggs boiled just before they’re due to hatch, resulting in the yolk oozing out followed by a chicken foetus. They are very popular throughout the Philippines and are sold by street vendors.

Indonesia
In Indonesia coffee is a delicacy. Kopi Luwak is the rarest, most expensive gourmet coffee in the world and is made from the excrement of an Indonesian creature called the Luwak. Luwak eat coffee cherries but cannot digest the beans so these come out whole and are used to make the pricey hot drink.
