It is a known fact that there are more African Americans in our jails and prisons than other ethnic races as a percentage of the total population. Now that we have elected an African-American president, we may see more leniencies in the court towards black Americans. It is true that the court systems of the past have gone harder on African-Americans, than blue-eyed white people.

Nevertheless, a person should be equal under the law and just because someone is a black American does not give them an upper hand on the justice in our nation, or it shouldn’t anyway. Of course, since our president is black, this indeed will slightly change the stereotype of people of color amongst the general population and the juries in our courts. This means that some African-Americans will get off for crimes they did commit and should have been prosecuted for.

Our prejudices are not something we like to talk about in our society, but they do exist and as these stereotypes change, we should expect Black prosecution rates to fall, now that our president is black and Barack Obama is in the White House. Of course, anybody that says anything about this natural occurrence will surely be called a racist. It really is true that in America when it comes to race we are a bunch of chickens and we are unwilling to talk about the reality.

We should discuss things like this to make sure that justice is blind toward race, religion, and/or ethnicity. Our court systems must remain fair and true to their cause so that all people will have justice and those victims that have been hurt by crimes can feel comfortable knowing that justice will be served no matter what.

In the past many white people have skated by for their crimes, and yes, this is unacceptable. But, by the same token if we let criminals off just because of the color of their skin, if they happen to be black, then we haven’t learned anything have we? Reverse discrimination is a lie to our founding principles just as much as discrimination is against the law. Think on this.
